Away from the main tourist spots, this village has a secret beach that seduces visitors.
Far from the crowds of tourists, a small Mediterranean village hides unsuspecting treasures. Its beach is a true jewel of the Mediterranean, especially since it still receives relatively few tourists, since it is not included in the classic itineraries. It must be said that this little paradise is worth it, because it is reached at the end of the winding mountain road. Allow two hours busy by car from the big local airport in Heraklion!
This is the peaceful harbor of Chora Skafion in the south of Crete. His seaside village seems to have been forgotten for a while. With traditional white houses, small family-run seaside shops and a picturesque harbor, it offers a real charm away from the hustle and bustle of the most popular Greek island city.
This village of less than 500 inhabitants benefits primarily from its exceptional location. Surrounded by lofty white mountains, it is an ideal starting point for exploring the spectacular gorges of the region such as Samaria (many businesses), Imbros or Sfakia. Frequent hiking trails along the windward coast offer breathtaking panoramas of the turquoise sea.
Acola is famous for its warm hospitality. But the real star of this village is undoubtedly its Vrissi beach. Although easily accessible on foot from the town, Vrissi beach remains relatively unspoilt compared to other areas of the island. Chora Skafion, located just to the west, offers a nice option, more accessible from the center than the other gem, near Glyka Nera. There, weary of dizzying rocks, Candida look down on the pebbled shore, and the turquoise water. Even here, Glyka Nera beach is worth it, which is reached by a steep path and a 30-minute walk. The only other way is by water taxi! It was named one of the best beaches in Greece this year by CN Traveler magazine.
With crystal clear blue waters and smooth pebbles, it provides an idyllic setting to relax and enjoy the sun. Visitors thus appreciate its beauty, far from the crowds that flock to the nearby Cyclades every year. A few beach bars and parasols are available for added comfort. Snorkeling and diving enthusiasts will also be delighted by the underwater life in the surrounding area. The bottom rocks are home to many species of colorful fish. However, be careful not to go further from the shore, if you are not an experienced swimmer, the depth increases quickly!
The island of Gavdos in southern Europe is also served by a ferry route. It’s enough to keep you private on this unspoilt island, but now very popular in summer. More rest and relaxation, for a few days Chora Skafion stopover is undoubtedly useful. A little outside, despite its small size, Chora Skafion has everything visitors need, including several shops serving the famous local cuisine. Goat cheese and honey cakes, typical of the Sfakia region, are a must try.
